So anyway... with all the recent talk about rookies, and keepers, I got to thinking about two of the most hyped rookies from the early days of Sunny Day.
Specifically Pat Burrell, and Eric Chavez.
Both were pegged as future MVP's, if not future Hall-of-Famers before they ever had an at-bat in the Bigs. Peter Gammons was rumored to have a poster of Chavez above his bed. "In the three decades I've been in baseball, I've seen George Brett, Barry Bonds and Robin Yount, but when I see a kid like Eric Chavez — he's the best left-handed opposite-field power hitter I've ever seen," said A's hitting coach Thad Bosley, a 14-year major-leaguer in 2001. Burrell was the MVP of the 96 College World Series, and won the 1998 Golden Spikes Award. Burrell was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies with the first overall draft choice in the 1998 MLB draft.
Both seem like disappointments don't they?
Well, courtesy of Baseball-Reference, , here are the average stats over a 162 game season for the two highly rated-rookies .

Crazy similar, huh? Get this: For their careers, Chavez has made $39,691,000. Burrell has made $39,560,000. Almost exactly the same.
But I'm getting distracted with Jayson Stark-like crap.
The questions I pose is this:
Are these men disappointments? Who else since the dawn of Sunny Day has come on the scene with great hype, only to be really good?

Dan, relax, have a cream soda. This is good for the league. We are building up a head of steam heading into draft day and that's what it is all about.
Look, we implemented the auction to spark more interest, fuel more debates, get back to the madness of the early years and you know what, it's happening.
People are watching waiver wires, listening to GMs of other teams, looking for $1 rookies, whether you agree with the strategy or not, people give a crap. Mission accomplished. There is a blog now.
It's just frustrating because a lot of these players were picked up and remained on rosters since last June. You are waiting, waiting to see if they will pan out, refusing to drop them. Then the SDL deadline comes and you have to make an uninformed premature decision and oops... tough shit, your months of waiting were for nothing. That is what fuels $1 madness.
For what it's worth, the town tavern lady called me today, FURIOUS.
Cream soda is good.

Also...totally random subject, but since we haven't really had the chance to speak about this due to the "situation" I figured now was a good time because who knows how long us actually speaking will last...rock band and guitar hero....frigin amazing. I am sure you have both....you do have both don't you? I have found a new vice to annoy my wife with.
